Centennial Printing-out Paper (P.O.P.) is the only alternative-process paper manufactured commercially. While other alternative processes depend on paper hand-coated by the developer, P.O.P. is machine-coated: when you open the packet the image is formed by the action of light during exposure.
The scientific principles behind P.O.P were discovered by Johan Heinrich Schlze in 1727, when he observed the reaction between silver chloride and lime. From the late 19th century P.O.P., coated with silver chloride and gelatin emulsion, became one of the most popular photographic processes.
Kodak's Solio P.O.P. was finally discontinued in 1987. In 1995, Chicago Albumen Works Commissioned kentmere Photographic to produce Centennial P.O.P., keeping this fascinating historic process alive.
In addition to its use by photographers. P.O.P. is a wonderful educational tool, allowing students to see for themselves the magic of images appearing on sensitized paper and get an insight into the history of photography.
